A full fleet of longer trains running on the Jubilee line

Tube Lines delivers on time, on budget

An event today at Stratford station with the Mayor, new Commissioner for Transport for London, London Underground and Tube Lines marked the completion of the project to add an extra carriage to all Jubilee line trains. Tube Lines completed lengthening all 59 Jubilee line trains to create more space for passengers on time and on budget over the Christmas period. Since the line reopened in January, commuters have benefited from longer trains and a new timetable being operated by London Underground which means more trains running than ever before on the line.

The process of adding the new carriages to existing trains was complex as the trains had to be split into two and the extra carriage inserted within the train rather than adding it to one end. Rigorous testing was essential to guarantee safety. Although testing took place early last year, the main work to lengthen trains began on 1 December 2005. Many conversions were completed during a short line closure which started on Boxing Day and finished two days ahead of schedule on 29 December when passengers could first use the longer trains. The final three trains were lengthened on 5 January, a week ahead of schedule and underwent extensive testing before entering passenger service on Monday 9 January.

This is the final step in a project to increase capacity on the Jubilee line by 17%. The new carriages offer space for an extra 6,000 passengers to travel each hour during peak periods. However, further improvements are imminent – in spring, another four trains will be added to the fleet, helping to boost reliability. This work forms part of Transport for London’s £10bn investment over the next five years to improve and expand London's transport network. More than half of that is in the Tube.
